Learn More About This Effort

Why should I consider supporting creators?
If you find yourself consistently enjoying a creator’s content or are particularly invested in a specific show, it’s safe to say you’re getting value from it. The fact that it’s provided for free doesn’t diminish its worth compared to paid content. Offering a modest financial gesture demonstrates your appreciation for the creator’s talent and commitment, motivating them to enhance their skills and produce more quality shows. Additionally, when multiple listeners contribute, it accumulates, potentially evolving into a modest income stream for the creator. Your support goes a long way in fostering continued excellence.

It is possible for listeners and hosts to create, foster, and support a culture where all of these things exist:

  • Shows are free for any Stationhead user/listener to enjoy.
  • The shows that some creators develop and produce provide a real value to some listeners.
  • Some creators are not interested in asking for or collecting any gratuities for their productions on Stationhead.
  • Some creators choose to suggest that listeners offer gratuities if they are so inclined or inspired.
  • Some listeners choose to reward some creators monetarily, through external services (i.e., not via Stationhead coins), as a show of support and encouragement.
  • Some listeners choose to “subscribe” to some creators on a monthly basis, as a show of greater connection and/or a promise of engagement.
  • Some listeners may really enjoy the work of some creators (or the participation of some listeners) for whom the fees for a monthly Apple or Spotify account is a budget-buster, and just a few listeners making one-time payments, or a few memberships of repeating support, would make all the difference to that great creator.

In essence, we have the opportunity to remove the stigma around seeking financial support and make it commonplace for creators to confidently and authentically encourage their audience to consider contributing monetarily.

I'm a creator, how to I get added to this page?
Get yourself on this page by adding your information through this form: Stationhead Directory Form that will display your information on the Stationhead Directory page. Be sure to include the URL (link) for your support site when completing that form. Once you are done with those steps, your name — and image (in most cases) — will appear on this page.
I'm a creator but I do it just for fun.
Maybe you’re just messing around and having a blast making shows on Stationhead – could be a hobby, a way to pass the time, or just something that puts a smile on your face. And hey, if people dig what you’re putting out there, that’s already a win, right?

Now, there are others who are super passionate about their Stationhead creations. For them, it’s not just a fun side thing; it’s a long-term commitment, maybe a stepping stone to something bigger, or simply a journey to get better at their craft. That’s where listeners who really appreciate the value in what these creators are doing come in – supporting them is key. Whether it’s throwing in a pledge or just showing some love, it goes a long way in helping them keep the good stuff coming.

Is it tacky to ask listeners for support?
Asking for money isn’t everyone’s thing, and figuring out our own value can be tricky. But there are practical ways to get support without sounding too eager. If people appreciate what you’re doing, they might just lend a hand. Others might start seeing the value in your work and chip in down the road.
What are some things I can say to listeners?
There are many ways to ask for and gather funds online (check out some ideas in the next section, below). But if you just slip in a casual mention during your show, keep it regular, and use phrases like ‘buy me a coffee’ or ‘help support what I’m up to’ instead of a straightforward ‘send me money,’ you’ll start getting folks realizing your creations have some real value, and they might be up for showing some support.”

An example suggestion could be as simple as:

“Hey, folks, thank you so much for listening. If you enjoy my shows, I’d love for you to buy me a coffee! See the link in my LinkTree or go to buymeacoffee.com/myname.”

Make the suggestion in the middle or end of the show, or both (i.e., maximum two times.) Remember to do this for every show. It should be low-key, but consistent!

What methods can I use to collect gratuities?
You should first decide if you want to use a direct-cash phone app, like Cash.app or Venmo, or a crowdfunding site like BuyMeACoffee.com or Patreon.com.

Direct-cash apps allow the listener to choose the exact amount they want to give you. (These often have no fees.) Crowdfunding sites allow the listener to buy “coffees” (or whatever item you want to use) or “subscribe” for a monthly amount. (These often have a surcharge of about 10%.)

The “coffee” model works well when a listener wants to acknowledge a great show. The subscription model works well when a listener wants to show a creator they enjoy their overall efforts.

Why not just use Stationhead's built-in tip system?
Stationhead’s in-app tipping system is super easy to use. Just purchase coins (at about 2 cents apiece), and award them to creators in various increments. It is a great way to immediately reward a creator while you are listening to a show.

The in-app tipping system has these serious drawbacks:

  • A creator must accrue at least 1000 coins before they can cash them out.
  • The creator must wait 30 days to get the payout.
  • From our research, the actual payout for 1000 coins is about $9.17. (Apple takes a chunk when you purchase coins, and Stripe takes something when the creator gets the payout. ) By the time a creator gets paid for their coins, the value has been reduced about 50%.

Compare Stationhead’s in-app system (payment in 30 days at a 50% loss in value), to direct-pay and crowdfunding systems. Generally a creator will get 85% to 100% of what is paid, and the funds will reach them within hours or a couple days.
